Job Summary Reporting to the Associate Director of Resources and Operations of Moss Landing Marine Labs, the Environmental Health and Safety Officer is responsible for planning, implementing, and conducting an overall safety program for the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). The incumbent performs professional work in chemical, biological, and radiation safety, occupational health, and laboratory and workplace safety, including proper usage of lab and classroom spaces. Implements the SJSU Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), and advises leadership on necessary revisions to comply with State and Federal regulations or changes in site conditions and operations. Acts as the lead resource regarding safety at MLML, ensuring compliance with CSU emergency response systems, proper chemical, biological, lab equipment, and hazardous waste handling. Communicates protocols for chemical and biological use, storage, and disposal to the MLML community. Oversees county inspections related to hazardous materials and fire safety, and liaises with the College of Science Safety Team and SJSU Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). Distributes training materials, ensures training completion and documentation, and supports safety and awareness training, including EHS software support. Supports MLML faculty in maintaining specimen and sample archives. Key Responsibilities Conduct lab and shop safety inspections, maintain hazard reports and correction records. Coordinate with various stakeholders to resolve safety issues. Identify and implement emergency communication and inventory management applications. Update and reconcile chemical inventories annually. Ensure proper storage, labeling, and use of chemicals; assist PIs with SOP development and training. Guide PIs on PPE, spill kits, and safety equipment needs. Procure safety supplies for academic purposes. Provide safety training for shared equipment and coordinate maintenance of scientific/research equipment. Embed sustainability into job duties. Thorough knowledge of chemical safety theory and practice. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent training. Four years of administrative experience involving policy or program development. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering or a related field, or a Bachelor’s in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, Public Health, or related disciplines. Experience in environmental health and safety programs in laboratory settings. At least three years of progressively responsible experience in EHS program administration. Compensation Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist – Exempt II Salary Range: $6,570 - $8,820/month (anticipated), CSU range $5,537 - $10,014/month.
