Job Description

A well-established law firm in California seeks an Associate Attorney with at least three years of solid environmental litigation and counseling experience for a partnership track position within the Litigation Department. Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal representation and counsel in environmental litigation matters, including state and federal environmental laws.
  • Manage a diverse caseload related to hazardous and solid waste, water, air, and endangered species, as well as compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
  • Engage in environmental litigation and administrative enforcement matters and provide counseling on environmental permitting, due diligence, and compliance.
  • Conduct comprehensive legal research on environmental laws, regulations, and precedents to build robust case strategies.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents, including pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and settlement agreements.
  • Represent clients in court appearances, hearings, and other legal proceedings, presenting arguments and examining witnesses.
  • Engage in settlement negotiations and alternative dispute resolution processes to achieve favorable client outcomes.
  • Consult with clients to understand their environmental legal needs, provide strategic advice, and manage expectations.
  • Collaborate with environmental experts and consultants, preparing them for testimony in court.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of effective legal strategies for environmental litigation cases.
  • Work closely with legal teams, paralegals, and support staff to ensure comprehensive case management.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, providing clear communication and updates on case developments.
  • Ensure legal strategies and practices comply with relevant environmental laws, regulations, and ethical standards.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in California.
  • Three (3)+ years of experience handling environmental litigation cases, from pre-litigation to trial.
  • Proficiency in assisting clients with state and federal environmental matters.
  • Experience with land use litigation is considered a valuable asset.
  • Familiarity with laws governing hazardous and solid waste, water, air, endangered species, CEQA, and NEPA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships and deliver exceptional client service.
  • Desire to engage in substantive legal work, including drafting pleadings/motions, responding to written discovery, managing document discovery, conducting depositions, arguing motions, and counseling clients on environmental matters.

Additional Information:

  • Billable hours target of 1850 hours (including pro bono and certain administrative time)
  • Bonuses commence at 1850 billable hours, with significant bonuses for associates who bill 1950 hours or more

Salary/Benefits:

  • $230,000 - $300,000+, DOE
